The prize will be presented on 18 March by the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, and Akademie President Klaus Staeck

Author Sherko Fatah has been awarded the 2015 Berlin Great Art Prize. The jury is honouring an author whose literature has an inherent political and existential urgency, which is all too rare.

The Berlin Art Prize in the Visual Arts section is being awarded to Belgrade-born media artist Marta Popivoda, whose work deals with social upheavals in the construction of state choreography. The Architecture prize goes to architect Achim Menges, who has an architecture firm in Frankfurt and is a professor at the University of Stuttgart, where he founded the Institute for Computational Design (ICD). The music section jury has chosen to split the prize between composer Marena Whitcher from Switzerland, whose work draws on both jazz and pop, and Rafael Nassif from Brazil with his sound art making comprehensive use of space. In the Literature section the prize goes to Bonn-born writer, playwright and translator Thomas Melle, whose novel 3000 Euro describes the lives of two men who are relegated to the margins of society. The Performing Arts prize is being awarded to Berlin-based Tanzkollektiv laborgras, established by dancers Renate Graziadei and Arthur Stäldi and distinguishing itself through ongoing collaborations with representatives of other art forms as well as an exploration of dance traditions, in particular American postmodern dance. In Film and Media Arts, Novosibirsk-born Andrey Zvyagintsev is being honoured in particular for his most recent feature film Leviathan, a multi-layered, real-world work of art of almost mythical dimensions.

The Berlin Art Prize Jubilee Foundation 1848/1948 was endowed by the Senate of Berlin in 1948 in memory of the 1848 March Revolution, and has been awarded by the Akademie der Künsteon behalf of the state since 1971. The prize giving ceremony will be held on Wednesday 18 March at 8 p.m. in the Akademie building on Pariser Platz.
